Hartwell Lake is one of the largest and most popular lakes in the South. It was constructed by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers between 1955 and 1963 as part of a flood control and hydropower project, and has become one of the most visited public recreation lakes in the nation. Hartwell Lake is located in the upper Savannah River basin on the border between northeast Georgia and upstate South Carolina. At normal pool stage, Hartwell Lake covers nearly 56,000 acres, and has a shoreline of 962 miles.
