Here's help if you can't find a boat ramp open
Tuesday, November 04, 2008 :: 153 Views
As a service to LHA members, we are sharing the following notice from LHA Business Member, Big Water Marina. For additional information, please call Big Water Marina directly at the phone number provided.

- - - Begin Notice - - -

Water level dropping. You need your boat out. There are no ramps available.

Anderson Crane and Big Water Marina are here to help you. We are organizing together with boaters on certain days during
November 2008 to load boats from the water at Big Water Marina to your trailer. Act fast because water levels are dropping every day and we soon won’t be able to reach them.

Also, for your convenience, a pump out boat will be on site.

Any questions call:
  Anderson Crane @ 1-800-617-0299
  or
  Big Water Marina @ 1-864-226-3339

Date and price will depend on how many boats participate. This could be your last chance.

Closing of Corps of Engineers boat ramps
Tuesday, November 04, 2008 :: 193 Views
We want to alert you to anticipated lake conditions that you should plan for. The Corps is currently projecting lake levels down about 25 feet by late December, with a likely rise later in the winter/early spring. The Corps has also announced the "official" closing of all their boat ramps, although they are temporarily adding gravel at the end of several ramps to provide some access, as listed in their announcement (see attached article.) Please consider this and your current dock conditions to assess whether you need to remove boats, etc., before that is no longer an option.

The Corps published the following article in the Anderson Independent Mail regarding closing of boat ramps.

Saturday, October 25, 2008

HARTWELL — Officials with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Hartwell Lake Office announced Friday that because of record-breaking low lake levels, all Corps managed ramps are closed until further notice.

The Corps marks ramps as "closed" with signs when there is less than three vertical feet of water at the end of the ramp.

The longest ramps managed by the Corps on Hartwell Lake go to elevation 640' feet mean sea level (msl.). Today's lake elevation is 641.75 ft-msl.

Because of the low lake levels, the Corps has taken actions to extend the use of five boat ramps by placing rock or gravel on the lake bed at the end of the ramps.  Boaters are urged, however, to inspect ramp conditions carefully and use at their own risk.

"As the lake level continues to drop, we will continue to monitor these areas and add more rock as long as the slope of the selected ramps allows for that," said Tanya Grant, Corps Park Ranger at Hartwell Lake. “However, anyone using a boat ramp needs to inspect it carefully to make sure it is usable for their particular boat and trailer."

The ramps that have been extended by adding rock are:

-   Big Oaks and Crawfords Ferry in Hart Co., Ga.
-   Green Pond and Hattons Ford in Anderson Co., SC.
-   Martin Creek in Oconee Co., SC.

Even with these extensions, closed signs will still be posted at the boat ramps because of the constantly changing lake conditions.

Drought Management and the Drought Contingency Plan
Friday, September 12, 2008 :: 447 Views

The Corps operates Hartwell and the other two Savannah Lakes (Russell and Thurmond) per the Drought Contingency Plan once a drought level 1 condition is reached (656MSL for Hartwell summer pool). The purpose of the drought plan is to conserve water resources in the lakes, while providing flows necessary to protect the drinking water, commercial and environmental needs of the lower basin. A revised drought plan was put in effect several years ago with the consensus of  both states, federal agencies and Savannah Basin stakeholders. The main revision in the plan called for flow reductions at drought level 1 versus the old plan that did not call for any mitigation until level 2.

Two Corps recreation areas scheduled for maintenance.
Monday, August 04, 2008 :: 391 Views

SAVANNAH, GA. --The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers has scheduled maintenance at two recreation areas managed by the Hartwell Project Office. Beginning on Monday, August 11, the Fairplay Recreation Area in Oconee County, South Carolina, will close to perform maintenance on the parking areas for about 10 days. Weather permitting and barring any unforeseen delays, work should be completed and the park re-opened by Friday, August 22.

Shoreline stabilization work at the Singing Pines Recreation Area in Anderson County will begin on Monday, August 19. The park will remain open during this work, however, a small section of road within the park near Shelter No. 1, may be blocked. Work should be completed by Friday, August 29.

Boaters displaced during the temporary closure of Fairplay are encouraged to use nearby ramps to launch. However, due to the current low water conditions, several ramps on Hartwell Lake are unusable. Corps officials remind the public to check for updated list of ramps available before coming. Contact the Hartwell Project Office for the latest information by calling toll free at 1-888-893-0678, or visit their website at www.sas.usace.army.mil/lakes/hartwell .

Corps Commander Sets The Record Straight
Saturday, April 12, 2008 :: 1210 Views

As the commander of the organization responsible for the Savannah River System, I carefully gauge the public’s understanding of our management of the reservoirs on the upper river. I often read statements perpetuating the belief that hydropower production is the sole purpose for the reservoirs. Let me lay that myth to rest. The reservoirs have multiple purposes: flood damage reduction, recreation, water quality and water supply, downstream navigation, environmental stewardship, fish and wildlife management and hydropower production. Georgia Approves State Water Plan
Monday, January 21, 2008 :: 757 Views

The Georgia Water Plan was approved by the Georgia General Assembly on January 18. Georgia has many of the same management programs and processes that South Carolina had before they decided they needed to have a more comprehensive and integrated plan developed to guide them in water use as they move forward. While the Lake Hartwell Association may not totally agree with all the final policies and practices it contains it is considered a major improvement over what Georgia had. If you would like to see the final Georgia water plan please click here.

Lake Level Petition
Friday, April 06, 2007 :: 334 Views
In 2006 the Hartwell Municipal and Chamber Coalition, of which LHA is a member, initiated a petition. The purpose of the petition is to require the Corps of Engineers to maintain Hartwell Lake at 660 Mean Sea Level (MSL) in winter months for a 5-year study period, rather than at the normal winter pool level of 656MSL as dictated by the rule curve. LHA is committed to maintaining Hartwell Lake as full as possible within a sound scientific approach to water management. After careful consideration, the LHA Board decided not to sign this petition.
