The following information was recently released by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Volunteers still needed for Hartwell Lake cleanup

Savannah, Georgia – The annual Hartwell Lake cleanup campaign is underway and volunteers are still needed to help pick up litter around the lake between now and September 25, National Public Lands Day.

“So far, we’ve had a good response with a lot of last year’s volunteers participating again, but we would like more new participants,” said Hartwell Lake Park Ranger Scott DeMore. “There are still particular areas like old road endings and areas near bridges that need to be cleaned up. People that live adjacent to the lake are encouraged to sign up and walk the shoreline in their vicinity.”

This is a great activity for scout groups, civic organizations, subdivision residents, businesses, as well as families and friends in the Hartwell Lake region to become involved in supporting the lake community. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Hartwell Lake Office  toll free at 1-888-893-0678, ext. 341, or (706) 856-0341 to register, or go to
www.sas.usace.army.mil/lakes/hartwell .

Trash bags are provided and all participants will be treated to a free “Volunteer Appreciation” picnic on Sept. 25 where there will be activities for children, free food, and door prizes.

Volunteers are encouraged to sign up now. Groups pick up litter at their own convenience during the cleanup campaign. “Some groups even pick up litter in the morning on the last day of the campaign on Sept. 25, and then come directly over to the picnic,” said DeMore.

The cleanup campaign is coordinated by the Corps’ Hartwell Lake Office and the Lake Hartwell Association, a non-profit organization that promotes cooperation, assistance and information exchange among those concerned with preserving the lake.
